Introduction and Overview of Pointer Software

Pointer software

We know that, at times, an individual’s learning and social difficulties can present real barriers to their progress in education, training or employment. Getting appropriate help to address such personal difficulties can become a major barrier in itself, often resulting in feelings of inertia and a lack of motivation for personal change.

NP2 is Hoolet’s latest version of Pointer Software - an information access system that helps the user identify issues that may be adversely affecting some aspect of their life. It then links the user directly to information on support services relevant to these issues.

Because NP2 can be tailored to cover any relevant personal issues for which local or national support services exist, it’s possible to create customised versions that meet the needs of both general population groups and particular user groups.

The Pointer Principle is to empower, not to disempower.

Who can use NP2?

NP2 is designed as confidential user service. Most users will not need prior training in order to use it. Others can be introduced to it by staff in a general way and then given opportunities to use it in confidence. NP2 can also be accessed by the user and support staff working collaboratively.

It is not intended to replace support staff services. It can enhance their role whilst reducing their workload.

Hoolet aim to make all their software as accessible as is practicable. NP2 incorporates a number of features that improve accessibility, particularly for those users with visual or reading difficulties.

The user interacts with the “front end” of the package, which can be on CD ROM, a single hard drive or a server. This part of the software is questionnaire-based and helps the user to identify, select and prioritise relevant concerns.

The “back end” of the package then provides direct links to our Internet database of pre-selected services that can help the user to address chosen issues.

An optional report section can also be included, allowing the recording and printing of the user's plans and outcomes.

Why would we need NP2?

Nett Pointer software

The need for NP2 software arises as a result of four main factors;

- The ever-increasing number and variety of support services which exist to help people with particular concerns and needs;
- The practical difficulties which organisations face in ensuring that their support staff are aware of all the relevant support services;
- The many barriers which prevent individuals from approaching staff for support;
- The difficulty which some users can experience in clearly articulating their concerns or needs.

NP2 software is effective because it gives the user greater control of the process of seeking help and information. It helps to break down some of the barriers that can prevent people taking those important next steps.
